Which programs pay for home care in Flint, MI and Genesee County?

Flint families usually have three routes to paid care at home. The right one depends on how much help your loved one needs and whether they already have Medicaid.

Option Who runs it in Genesee County Best for Can family be paid?
Home Help program Genesee County MDHHS office (Adult Services) Medicaid recipients who need help with bathing, dressing, meals or mobility at home Yes, except spouses and parents of minors
MI Choice Waiver Valley Area Agency on Aging (waiver agent for Genesee, Lapeer, Shiawassee) People who qualify for nursing-home level of care but want to stay home Yes, through self-directed care options
Agency caregiver Supportive Solutions Homecare Families with no available relative, or who need respite or fill-in hours Not applicable; we send a trained caregiver

Most Flint families we work with start with Home Help because it has no waiting list. Our Home Help program guide covers the statewide rules in depth.

Who qualifies for Home Help in Genesee County?

Eligibility is set by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and is the same in Flint as anywhere in Michigan. Your loved one must:

  • Have active Michigan Medicaid
  • Need hands-on help with at least one activity of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, toileting, eating or getting in and out of bed
  • Live in their own home, apartment or a relative’s home in Genesee County, not in a nursing facility
  • Have a caregiver, age 18 or older, who is willing to enroll as an MDHHS individual provider

Many Flint families already have Medicaid, which is the hardest step. If you are unsure, use our Medicaid eligibility check before you call the county.

Where is the Genesee County MDHHS office?

Unlike Wayne County, Genesee County is served by a single MDHHS county office, located in Flint. That office handles Medicaid applications, Home Help assessments and ongoing case reviews for every city and township in the county.

Confirm the current street address and lobby hours through the office locator at michigan.gov/mdhhs before you visit. When you call, ask for Adult Services and request a “Home Help assessment” by name; front-desk staff may not recognize a general request for “help at home.”

For MI Choice, contact the Valley Area Agency on Aging in Flint. It screens for nursing-facility level of care and manages the regional waiting list. See our MI Choice Waiver page for what the screening involves.

How much does Home Help pay in Flint?

MDHHS pays Home Help individual providers a statewide hourly rate. Through Supportive Solutions, caregivers earn a minimum of $18 per hour.

Monthly pay depends on the hours authorized after the home assessment. A parent who needs help with two or three daily tasks will be approved for fewer hours than someone who needs full assistance with bathing, dressing, toileting and meals. Our post on how much family caregivers get paid in Michigan shows what typical authorizations look like.

Under Home Help, MDHHS is the payer. Under MI Choice, the waiver agent contracts with providers, and pay rates and hour limits are set through the waiver rather than by the county office.

How to become a paid family caregiver in Flint

  1. Check Medicaid status. If your loved one does not have Medicaid, apply through MI Bridges. Nothing else can start until coverage is active.
  2. Request the Home Help assessment. Call the Genesee County MDHHS office or ask us to submit the request. The Adult Services worker schedules a visit to the home in Flint or a nearby township.
  3. Gather medical documentation. MDHHS may require a medical needs form signed by your loved one’s doctor. Hurley, McLaren Flint and Genesee Health System clinics all handle these routinely.
  4. Enroll as a provider. Create a MiLogin account, complete CHAMPS provider enrollment, and pass the background screening. Our CHAMPS enrollment walkthrough covers every screen.
  5. Start care and log visits with EVV. Once hours are authorized, you clock in and out on each visit and MDHHS pays you directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get paid to take care of my dad in Flint if he is on Medicaid?

Yes. Michigan’s Home Help program pays adult children and other relatives, except spouses, to provide personal care for a Medicaid recipient in Genesee County. Your dad must need hands-on help with at least one daily activity and live at home. You enroll with MDHHS as an individual provider through CHAMPS and are paid by the state.

Where do I apply for Home Help in Genesee County?

Home Help requests go through the Genesee County MDHHS office in Flint. Ask for Adult Services and say you want a Home Help assessment. Confirm the current address and hours through the office locator at michigan.gov/mdhhs. Supportive Solutions Homecare can submit the request for you and follow up with the caseworker.

Is there a waiting list for MI Choice in Flint?

Often, yes. MI Choice enrollment is limited by funding, and the Valley Area Agency on Aging keeps a list for Genesee, Lapeer and Shiawassee counties. Home Help has no waiting list, so many Flint families start there and stay on the MI Choice list for extra services later.

Does the Flint water crisis affect Home Help eligibility?

Not directly. Home Help eligibility is based on Medicaid status and functional need, not on water exposure. However, some Flint residents gained Medicaid through the expanded coverage that followed the crisis, and anyone with active Medicaid who needs help with daily tasks can request a Home Help assessment.

What if my mom lives in Grand Blanc or Davison, not in Flint itself?

The same programs apply. Genesee County MDHHS handles Home Help for every city and township in the county, and Valley AAA handles MI Choice. Supportive Solutions Homecare serves Flint, Burton, Grand Blanc, Davison, Flushing, Fenton, Swartz Creek, Mt. Morris and Clio.
