Why Dearborn families need home care support in their own language

Dearborn is home to one of the largest Arab-American communities in the United States, with deep Lebanese, Yemeni, Iraqi, Syrian and Palestinian roots in east and south Dearborn. Many elders speak Arabic at home and prefer to be cared for by their own children rather than by a stranger.

That preference fits Michigan’s Home Help program well. The program was designed around the idea that the care recipient chooses the caregiver. The barrier is rarely eligibility; it is paperwork written in English, phone calls to county offices, and a CHAMPS enrollment portal that assumes fluent English.

We remove that barrier. Our Dearborn intake team explains eligibility, gathers documents, calls MDHHS, and completes CHAMPS with you in Arabic. We do the same in Spanish for families in Southwest Detroit.

Can my family get Home Help paperwork and visits in Arabic?

Mostly, yes. Here is what each step looks like for an Arabic-speaking household:

  • Medicaid application. MI Bridges is available in Arabic, and MDHHS provides free interpreter services when you apply in person or by phone.
  • Home assessment. You can request an interpreter for the MDHHS Adult Services visit. We also attend with families who want a bilingual advocate in the room.
  • Provider enrollment. CHAMPS and MiLogin are in English only. We walk your caregiver through each screen and keep copies of what was submitted.
  • Ongoing care. EVV clock-ins are simple taps on a phone. We train caregivers in Arabic and stay available for questions.

For the statewide rules on who qualifies, read our Michigan Home Help program guide.

Who qualifies for Medicaid home care in Dearborn?

Eligibility is set by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS). Your loved one must have active Michigan Medicaid, need hands-on help with at least one activity of daily living, and live at home in Dearborn or elsewhere in Wayne County.

The caregiver must be at least 18, pass a background screening, and cannot be the care recipient’s spouse. Adult children, siblings, nieces, nephews, in-laws and close family friends can all be paid. Many Dearborn households are multigenerational, and Home Help allows the caregiver to live in the same home.

Where is the MDHHS office for Dearborn?

Dearborn is served by Wayne County MDHHS, which assigns cases to district offices by home address rather than by city. Confirm your loved one’s office through the locator at michigan.gov/mdhhs, or ask us and we will identify it and submit the Home Help assessment request.

If your loved one needs more care than Home Help provides, the MI Choice Waiver for Dearborn and western Wayne County is handled by The Senior Alliance, the region’s Area Agency on Aging. Our MI Choice Waiver page explains the nursing-facility level of care screening.

Community organizations such as ACCESS in Dearborn also help families with benefit applications. We coordinate with them when a family is already working with a case manager there.

How much does Home Help pay a family caregiver in Dearborn?

MDHHS pays Home Help individual providers a statewide hourly rate. Through Supportive Solutions, caregivers earn a minimum of $18 per hour. Hours are set by the assessment, so a father who needs help with bathing, dressing, toileting and meals will be approved for more hours than one who needs help only with bathing.

Our post on how much family caregivers get paid in Michigan shows monthly examples and explains how payments arrive.

How to enroll in Home Help from Dearborn

  1. Call us or use the eligibility check. Tell us your preferred language and we assign a coordinator who speaks it.
  2. Confirm Medicaid. If your loved one is not enrolled, we help you apply through MI Bridges and upload documents.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the Home Help application in Arabic?

Yes. Supportive Solutions Homecare handles intake, MDHHS calls and CHAMPS enrollment with Arabic-speaking staff. MDHHS provides free interpreters for the assessment visit on request, and MI Bridges is available in Arabic. The forms you sign are still in English, so we review each one with you before you sign.

Can my son or daughter be paid to take care of me in Dearborn?

Yes. Michigan’s Home Help program pays adult children who provide personal care to a parent on Medicaid in Wayne County. Your child must be at least 18, pass an MDHHS background screening and enroll in CHAMPS. A spouse cannot be paid under Home Help, but another relative living in the home can.

Which MDHHS office handles Dearborn?

Dearborn is in Wayne County, and Wayne County MDHHS is divided into district offices by address. Your loved one’s office depends on their street address, not on the city name. Use the locator at michigan.gov/mdhhs or let us confirm the office and submit the Home Help request for you.

Does Home Help cover care during Ramadan or for religious routines?

Home Help pays for personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing, meal preparation and mobility. It does not dictate when those tasks happen, so a family caregiver can schedule meals around fasting hours and assist with washing before prayer. Hours must still be logged accurately through EVV.

Do you serve Dearborn Heights and other nearby cities?

Yes. We serve Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Melvindale, Allen Park, Garden City, Inkster, Westland, Taylor and Lincoln Park, along with Detroit’s west side and the rest of Wayne County. Ann Arbor, Flint, Lansing, Grand Rapids, Warren and Sterling Heights are also in our service area.
